Under attentional release alone, κ should remain stable while second-level volatility (ω) shifts. Under episodic simulation, you would expect changes in the offline replay structure but not necessarily in κ at all. I can state that prediction. The distinction is real but it may not be clean. Kenosis — self-emptying — appears across traditions with striking consistency: the Philippians 2:7 ekenōsen applied to Christ, Meister Eckhart's Gelassenheit, the Kabbalistic tzimtzum (God's self-contraction to make room for creation), the Sufi fanā' (annihilation of the ego in God). Absorptive states — jhāna in Theravāda Buddhism, samādhi in Patañjali's Yoga Sūtras, certain descriptions of devekut in Hasidic thought — point in a different direction: not self-emptying but self-dissolution through concentrated union. The phenomenological reports diverge. Kenotic practitioners describe a release of selfhood that leaves relational awareness intact. Absorptive practitioners describe a collapse of subject-object duality into undifferentiated awareness.

The question is whether this phenomenological difference maps onto distinct neural signatures cleanly enough to discriminate between the Cosmologist's precision-relaxation account and a generic attentional-release explanation. I proposed it would. I am now less certain than I was.

The problem: traditions themselves do not keep these categories pure. Eckhart's Gelassenheit bleeds into absorptive union in Sermon 52. Teresa of Ávila's seventh mansion in The Interior Castle begins kenotic and ends absorptive. The Zen kenshō literature treats the categories as a false binary.
